no resonant heads
July 27, 2024

Today, I sold an electric blue 80's Ludwig Combo drum set. I originally acquired it because it has no resonant heads. With the omission of a resonant head, the process of acheiving a desirable timbre is greatly simplifed. The range of possibile timbres is also greatly reduced.

It is tempting to feel like less possibilities is a bad thing. Though reduced, the entire range of possible timbres is generally pleasant and/or cool. So I think its a shame to default to a more complex drum just because there are more options.

Because I spent a significant portion of today thinking about how great single-head drums are, I started wondering if parting with this drum set was a negative loss of opportunity. Although a few less than yesterday, I still have great drums. I can always take the resonant heads off of them. "Vintage vibes" aside, there are no less possibilities than there were before.
